"Nostalgia sure ain't what it use to be and it never was".
A Centenary Year gives go
od cause for celebration and an opportunity to
add to the club's reputation. The Centenary Dinner, on May 5th 2006,
100 years to the day from the date the Club was opened, was a splendid
opportunity to celebrate and also to look forward. The Centenary Book
was unveiled for the first time on the night of the dinner and made
available to all members in the next few days. The book is a credit to
the club (thanks Iolo, Gwynn, Dennis and all other contributors) and
one of the best of its kind. Even non-golfers have found satisfaction
in its combination of history, analysis, reminiscence and superb
photography. We have a wonderful location for a golf course and must do
even more to make the scenery part of the club.
One can imagine golf
and dream golf, but then reality intrudes - we also have to play golf.
An average of close to 100 golfers per day did violence to the course
for the eight days of Centenary Golf Week. We enjoyed truly astonishing
weather (thanks Ross) and the winners provided scores that were almost
as spectacular. The centenary league was a big success and the
organisers had only one complaint: they failed to share in the over
generous prizes. Never mind, the club may decide to make Golf Festivals
(less than a week) part of their routine.
Non-members will, of course,
be welcome. In that way the Centenary may be the foundation for
continued enjoyment and celebration.
